John Barnett
Senior Communications Analyst
One of our two official social media freaks, John is a retired master chief who brings 25 years of DoD and Navy public affairs, journalism, newspaper management and training experience to the Vox team.
A “seasoned” veteran of the communication biz, John started with print journalism and photography in high school. A “fightin’ Ichabod” of Kansas’ Washburn University (we don’t get the fightin’ Ichabod thing either), John earned a bachelor’s degree in both English and Communications. Because of his hard work for the Navy — and the generosity of the U.S. military — he was selected to attend advanced communication theory courses at the University of Oklahoma. But as a native Texan, John has to keep that dark part of his life kinda quiet.
Some of his career milestones include media operations during the 2005 Indonesian tsunami, the USS George Washington commissioning, the 50th anniversary of D-Day commemoration, media operations during the return of the crashed P-3 crew from China, and the USS Abraham Lincoln’s media embed plan for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was also a lead instructor at the Defense Information School for its basic journalism and advanced editors courses.
In one way or another, John’s been in it all. He’s been a reporter, photographer, editor, emergency computer geek and dragged himself through the evolution to Internet-based new media and digital imagery. If you ask him about the 640K RAM ceiling, he’ll actually know what you’re talking about because he puts the “old” in old school. So naturally, we have him tweeting, blogging, and Facebooking Vox and client messages all over the place. Merritt was concerned that she’d have to pay disability if John ever got around to claiming ADD as a job-related injury, but then she realized he’d never get through all the forms.
John hangs his hat in Athens, Ga. (Go Dawgs! for his UGA-grad daughter), with his wife and an extremely demanding beagle.
